Driving Question:
How can we connect with characters in the stories that we read?
See us in action!

Project description:
For this project, the 5th grade students had worked on individual scratch projects to familiarize themselves with the program. Their ability and comfort levels with the program were quite varied. Cindy had read The Rainbow Fish to her students. One reason we chose this book was because the Scratch program had some pre-made sprites and backgrounds using the "water" theme. The story also has a number of character education themes which Cindy has been working on in the classroom.

We paired the kindergarteners with a 5th grader. Each pair had to create a Scratch program to depict what happened in the story. Some of the work is presented here.

Reflection:

We were impressed with how well the students worked with each other. The kindergarteners were able to learn a great deal more because they had the one on one attention from a 5th grader. The 5th graders were able to cement some of their learning about the Scratch program, but more importantly, worked on really helping someone else.

Both groups of students were very excited about their work and final projects. We hope to continue doing more "tech buddies" next year.
